Shiitake

Shiitake mushroom is available in capsule form – standardized to a certain amount of powder or concentrated extract (e.g., Shiitake Mushroom Swanson 500 mg). There are also liquid extracts – used in phytotherapy for rapid absorption.

Combined forms also include other medicinal mushrooms, such as Reishi or Maitake, for synergistic effects.

There are also fresh or dehydrated Shiitake mushrooms, which can be consumed as a functional food, integrated into culinary recipes.

Supplements and extracts from Japanese Shiitake mushrooms are recommended in multiple clinical and preventive contexts:

• Immunity stimulation – by increasing the activity of macrophages, T lymphocytes, and interferon production.
• Adjuvant in oncology – lentinan has been associated with a better survival rate in patients with gastric and lung cancer.
• Cardiovascular protection – erythadenine and beta-glucans reduce cholesterol levels and prevent atherosclerosis.
• Supporting liver health – due to its hepatoprotective and detoxifying effect.
• Adjuvant in antiviral treatments – used in chronic viral infections such as hepatitis or HPV infection.
• Improved nutritional status – source of protein, fiber, vitamin D, and B vitamins.
• Body weight control – beta-glucans induce a feeling of satiety and regulate lipid metabolism.

The recommended dose varies depending on the type of product, form of administration, and purpose of use:

• Standardized capsules: 500–1000 mg/day, administered in 1–2 doses, preferably after meals.
• Combined extracts (e.g., Reishi + Shiitake + Maitake): 1–2 capsules/day for 2–3 months, followed by a 1-month break.

It is important that administration be carried out under medical supervision in the case of people with chronic conditions or undergoing cancer treatment.

Although the safety of Shiitake mushrooms is well documented, there are a few contraindications:

• Allergy to mushrooms – rare but severe allergic reactions may occur
• Severe kidney or liver damage, without medical advice
• Autoimmune disorders – uncontrolled use may excessively stimulate the immune system.

For optimal effects, a minimum of 8–12 weeks of treatment is recommended.

Combining with other medicinal mushrooms (Reishi, Maitake) increases immunomodulatory and adaptogenic efficacy.

Supplements should be purchased from verified sources that comply with GMP and ISO standards.

Adverse reactions are rare and usually mild:

• Gastrointestinal disorders (bloating, mild nausea)
• Skin reactions – dermatitis, manifested by rashes and itching
• Potentiation of allergic reactions in sensitive individuals

Shiitake mushroom may have some drug interactions:

• Anticoagulants – Shiitake may increase the risk of bleeding due to its effect on blood platelets
• Immunosuppressants – it may reduce their effectiveness by stimulating immunity

Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines for severe chronic diseases at the same time as Shiitake.

There are no reports of severe toxicity following consumption of Shiitake supplements. However, excessive doses may cause:

• persistent digestive disorders
• allergic reactions
• exacerbation of autoimmune disorders

In case of overdose, it is recommended to discontinue administration and initiate symptomatic treatment.

The product should be stored in a dry, cool place, away from light, at temperatures below 25°C. Keep out of the reach of children to prevent accidental ingestion. Observe the expiry date stated on the packaging.
