Calmurofel

Calmurofel cats is available in the form of capsules for oral administration, intended for use in cats. The product is marketed in two pack sizes: boxes of 30 capsules or 120 capsules. The composition of each capsule includes the following active substances:

• Glucosamine HCl – 125 mg
• Chondroitin sulphate (MPS Protect) – 20 mg
• L-tryptophan – 37.5 mg
• Oralvisc® hyaluronic acid – 10 mg

Calmurofel capsules are particularly recommended for cats diagnosed with feline idiopathic cystitis, an inflammatory condition characterised by dysuria, haematuria, frequent urination and discomfort in the lower urinary tract.

The product may be used as a therapeutic adjunct for:

• restoring the glycosaminoglycan layer of the bladder mucosa;
• reducing inflammation and urothelial irritation;
• limiting the permeability of the bladder epithelium to irritants in the urine;
• reducing pain and discomfort associated with bladder inflammation;
• managing risk factors involved in the recurrence of cystitis episodes, such as stress and obesity.

The recommended daily dose for the initial treatment period, which should be maintained for at least 15 days, is as follows:

• Cats weighing less than 3 kg: 1 capsule per day
• Cats weighing over 3 kg: 2 capsules per day

In the case of chronic conditions or frequent recurrences, a maintenance dose may be established, adjusted according to clinical progress:

• Cats under 3 kg: 1 capsule every two days
• Cats over 3 kg: 1 capsule per day

Calmurofel Cats is generally well tolerated by cats and has no major contraindications when used as directed.

However, administration of the product should be avoided in the event of:

• known hypersensitivity to any of the product’s ingredients;
• animals that are intolerant to the components of the formula;
• situations where the vet considers administration to be inappropriate.

Calmurofel for cats should be used as part of a comprehensive therapeutic approach that includes changes to the cat’s environment and lifestyle. Reducing stress factors, maintaining an optimal body weight and ensuring an adequate water intake are essential elements in preventing recurrence.

The product’s ingredients act through complementary mechanisms. Glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate help restore the protective layer of the bladder, whilst Oralvisc® hyaluronic acid supports the integrity of the mucosa and may influence fat metabolism by reducing leptin levels. 

In general, Calmurofel is well tolerated by most cats. Adverse effects are rare and, when they do occur, are usually mild and transient. Possible reactions may include:

• mild digestive disturbances (e.g. abdominal discomfort or loose stools);
• temporary loss of appetite;
• hypersensitivity reactions, in isolated cases.

If persistent adverse reactions occur, administration of the product should be discontinued and consultation with a vet is recommended.

To date, no significant interactions between Calmurofel and other veterinary medicines or types of food have been reported.

The product may be administered concurrently with veterinary diets intended for urinary tract health or with other therapies prescribed for the management of idiopathic cystitis. However, it is recommended that the veterinary surgeon be informed of any concurrent treatment.

No significant cases of overdose have been reported in cats following administration of Calmurofel.

In the event of accidental ingestion of a quantity greater than that recommended, mild digestive symptoms such as diarrhoea or vomiting may occur. Monitoring the animal and consulting a vet are recommended if symptoms persist.

Calmurofel should be stored in a dry place, protected from direct light and moisture, at room temperature.

The product must be stored in its original packaging and kept out of reach of children and animals. Adherence to these conditions helps maintain the stability and efficacy of the active ingredients.
