Aescin

Aescin is available in two main forms:

• Film-coated tablets: each tablet contains 20 mg of alpha-escin and is intended for oral administration
• Gel for external use: Aescin gel contains 20 mg of alpha-escin per gram, together with heparin and diethylamine salicylate.

Aescin is indicated for the treatment and prevention of several conditions, including:

• Chronic venous insufficiency: Aescin helps relieve symptoms such as leg heaviness, edema, varicose veins and muscle cramps
• Postoperative and post-traumatic oedema: effective in the prevention and treatment of swelling and haematoma following surgery or trauma
• Varicose veins and phlebitis: Aescin is useful in treating vein inflammation and preventing venous thrombosis
• Local pain and inflammation: Aescin gel can be applied to affected areas to reduce pain and inflammation in the lower limbs.

Dosage varies depending on the form of release and the purpose of use:

Film-coated tablets - The usual dose is 2 tablets of Aescin 3 times a day, preferably after a meal, with a glass of water. After 2-3 months of treatment, you can switch to a maintenance dose of 2 tablets twice a day. 

Gel for external use - Apply a thin layer of gel to the affected area 3 to 5 times a day. It is important to gently massage the gel into the skin to facilitate absorption of the active ingredients. 

Aescin is not recommended in the following situations:

• Allergies to alpha-sescin, heparin, salicylates or any of the excipients
• Severe kidney disease: alpha-escin may impair kidney function and is contraindicated in patients with kidney failure
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid using the drug without doctor's advice

Aescin gel should not be applied to open wounds, irradiated skin or mucous membranes.

A skin sensitivity test is recommended before using the gel, especially in people with a history of allergies.

For effective treatment of venous insufficiency, it is recommended to combine the product with non-pharmacological measures such as wearing compression stockings and applying cold compresses.

Like any medicine, Aescin can cause side effects. These include:

• Allergic dermatitis with itching, redness, rash or hives
• Dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea .

Aescin may interact with other medicines and affect their effect:

• Anticoagulants: concomitant use may increase the risk of bleeding, so careful monitoring of clotting parameters is necessary
• Aminoglycoside antibiotics: potential for increased renal toxicity

In case of overdose with Aescin tablets, symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or gastrointestinal irritation may occur. 

In the case of gel, excessive application can cause local irritation and allergic skin reactions. 

If an overdose is suspected, seeking medical attention and drinking fluids to dilute the active substances in the body is recommended.

Aescin should be stored at room temperature, away from direct light and moisture. The product should not be left within the reach of children. Aescin gel should be kept in its original, hermetically sealed packaging.
