Turmeric has been used both in food as a spice and in Ayurvedic medicine for over 5000 years. Modern medicine has begun to recognize its importance, as we can see from over 3,000 publications that mention it and that have appeared in the last 25 years, and scientific research has highlighted its contribution to maintaining joint mobility, without causing stomach discomfort .
Withania somnifera – Ashwagandha, as it is known in traditional Indian medicine Ayurveda, or Indian ginseng, is one of the most important plants used traditionally in India for more than 3000 years, especially for its tonic, adaptogenic effects in rejuvenating treatments . In this tradition, it is also an ingredient of many formulas prescribed for the locomotor system, but also as general tonics.
Willow bark has a long tradition of use. After the identification of salicin and later, the synthesis of acetyl salicylic acid at the end of the 19th century, the interest in it decreased, then returned with the need for analgesics that are better tolerated by the body in contrast to the synthetic ones that create some discomfort especially in stomach level.
Frankincense (Boswellia) or olibanum, is probably the first odorant product used by humans. The resin obtained from the frankincense species has been used in religious and cultural ceremonies since the beginning of written history, being often mentioned in the Scriptures. It was one of the four plants used to prepare the Balsam of Jerusalem formulated in 1719 in the pharmacy of the Saint Savior monastery in the old city of Jerusalem. Traditionally, incense was also used for health. The main components of frankincense essential oil are mono and diterpenes, but also triterpenes such as boswellic acid, studied for its effect in the inflammatory response.
Guggul, the resin produced from the stem of the Commiphora mukul tree, has been used for more than 2000 years in the traditional Indian Ayurveda system of medicine, among other things, for the joints. The guggul resin represents a phytochemical reservoir with an important potential for health, containing flavonoids, terpenes and phytosterols, with different biological activities. Guggulsterone is perhaps the most studied compound in the last 10 years for its potential to reduce some pro-inflammatory factors.
In 1493, the companions of Columbus, landing on the island of Guadaloupe, saw the pineapple for the first time, which delighted them with its aroma and flavor. Bromelain from pineapple is an enzyme complex, a digestive enzyme related to trypsin, which achieves an effect of breaking down proteins and transforming them into nutrients and energy, necessary for an organism subjected to effort.
Piper longum, a close relative of black pepper, grows in the islands of the Indian Ocean, the Philippine Islands, southern India, Malabar, Bengal and Ceylon. The fruit of Piper longum has been used in traditional medicine, including the Ayurvedic system of medicine, where it is said to be a good rejuvenator. Piperine, the active substance in this species, increases the bioavailability of other substances, leading to faster onset of effects.
Betula alleghaniensis, or lutea, is called yellow birch in its native areas. In the early pioneering days of the American Northeast the "land seekers" brought back stories of a gigantic tree growing in the wilds of the East and in the remotest of the northern forests. It was a tree unknown to scientists until 1803 when the explorer Frenchman André Michaux described and named it.The essential oil extracted from this tree has a balsamic aroma and contains salicylic acid and methyl salicylate, substances also present in willow bark, well known for its therapeutic qualities.
