The principle of operation

The results represent the identification of the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid antigen. This antigen is generally detectable in upper respiratory tract samples during the acute phase of infection.

Positive results

They indicate the presence of viral antigens, but correlation with the patient's history and other diagnostic data is necessary to determine the infectious state. Positive results do not exclude bacterial infections or co-infections with other viruses. The detected agent may not be the definitive cause of the disease.

Negative results

In patients with symptoms after seven days, these should be taken as presumptive and should be verified by molecular methods if necessary. Negative results do not rule out SARS-CoV-2 infection and should not be used as the sole basis for decisions about patient treatment or care, including decisions for infection control. Negative results should be considered in the context of the patient's current exposures, history, and the presence of clinical signs and symptoms consistent with COVID-19.
