Long-term planning takes into account ecological factors, the growth rate of specific tree species and the overall health of the forest ecosystem. The goal is to create a balanced age structure of the trees in the forest. This is also helped by selective logging, where parts of the forest are not cut, but specific trees are selected based on their age, size and health. Another factor is that dead trees are often left in the forest to provide a habitat for insects, fungi or small animals.
