- The term oat (and its Latin ancestor, avena) comes from a Sanskrit word that meant happiness.
- This is the first and most important clue that tells us about the benefits that oats bring to the human body.
- Oats are the cereal with the richest protein content (12.6-14.9%) and essential fatty acids, such as linoleic acid.
- The soluble fiber content is important because it helps to normalize body weight through the ability to create a feeling of satiety and decrease appetite.
- For these reasons, oats are not only allowed, but even recommended to be included in the diet of children and convalescents.
- Oats contribute, through its lysine content (much higher than other cereals), to the synthesis of proteins in the body.
- It is beneficial for everyone and is recommended especially (but not only) in vegetarian and vegan diets as it contains essential amino acids necessary for the formation of proteins.
- Contraindications to the consumption of oats
- Oats may not be well tolerated by those suffering from nickel allergy and intolerance. As far as people suffering from celiac disease (intolerance to gluten) are concerned, it seems that recent research has shown, contrary to what was previously believed, that oats can be consumed, if during the technological process it has not has not been in any way mixed with wheat proteins.
- Apart from those stated above, there are no contraindications for oatmeal, neither in adults nor in children, in whose diet they can be introduced from the age of 6 months.
